Verner, Department of Education in Technology and Science, Technion – Israel Institute of Technology, Haifa 32000, Israel, [email protected] Abstract -This paper introduces the Trinity College FireFighting Home Robot Contest (TCFFHRC), evaluates the curricular impact of the contest at university and highschool levels, and provides examples of student projects inspired by the contest. We evaluate the contest by analyzing participant survey data from the 2000, and 2001 contests, and we present our conclusions about the educational benefits of developing a robot for this competition.

Robot Projects and Competitions as Education Design Experiments
This paper proposes the Education Design Experiment (EDE) as an instructional framework for robotics education and demonstrates how it is implemented in the Trinity College Fire-Fighting Home Robot Contest (TCFFHRC) projects. The overarching goal of the EDE is to examine how best to implement, evaluate, and conceptualize the robotics education process while designing, building and operating rob...
متن کاملController Design for an Autonomous Wall-climbing Micro-robot Based on TMS320LF2407 DSP Chip
Nishi [1-3], Backes [4] have built large wall-climbing robots with suction cups. However, designing a micro-robot that can climb walls, walk on ceilings, crawl through pipes and traverse on floors is a challenging task. Autonomous micro-robot system has wide applications include remotely monitoring hazardous environments, reconnaissance, defects inspection, and fire fighting. The restrictions s...
متن کاملRobotics Olympiads: A New Means to Facilitate Conceptualization of Knowledge Acquired in Robot Projects
This paper proposes theoretical robotics competitions, offered in conjunction with robot contests, as the framework to foster deep learning of concepts which underlie the practical projects and to facilitate the development of engineering aptitude. We present our experiences with integrating theoretical tests in the Trinity College Fire-Fighting Home Robot Contest and National Botball Tournament.
متن کاملSocially Responsible Engineering Education Through Assistive Robotics Projects: The RoboWaiter Competition
This paper proposes an approach to promote students’ social awareness as part of challenging projects in robot design. A new robot contest was developed to motivate and focus these projects: RoboWaiter, the first international robot competition in the rapidly growing area of assistive robotics. RoboWaiter has been held since 2009 in Hartford, Connecticut in conjunction with the annual internati...
متن کاملEffective Mechatronic Models and Methods for Implementation an Autonomous Soccer Robot
Omni directional mobile robots have been popularly employed in several applications especially in soccer player robots considered in Robocup competitions. However, Omni directional navigation system, Omni-vision system and solenoid kicking mechanism in such mobile robots have not ever been combined. This situation brings the idea of a robot with no head direction into existence, a comprehensi...
